Grooving recommendations:
When grooving for a barn with any bedding material other than sand, we recommend 3⁄4" wide grooves with a depth of 5/16".
This includes:
- Sawdust
- Straw
- Chop
- Compost
Our machines cut at 4" centres to ensure that there is enough floor surface to support the cow's hoof.
3⁄4" grooving was developed to provide the perfect amount of traction with non-sand bedding. The increased width gives enough space for scraping systems to clean out easier, preventing the grooves from being clogged with a larger style bedding.
Since being introduced, 3⁄4" diamond pattern has been proven to be the most effective and durable floor pattern for barns with a non-sand bedding.
New barn floor finish recommendations:
We recommend a darby smooth concrete floor, or a broom finish, as these are the preferred finishes prior to the concrete being grooved.
Customers tell us that culling in grooved new barns can be reduced from an average 15% (without grooving) to less than 3% (with grooving)
