Non-Sand Barn

Grooving recommendations:

When grooving for a barn with any bedding material other than sand, we recommend 34" wide grooves with a depth of 5/16".

This includes:

  • Sawdust
  • Straw
  • Chop
  • Compost

Our machines cut at 4" centres to ensure that there is enough floor surface to support the cow's hoof.

34" grooving was developed to provide the perfect amount of traction with non-sand bedding. The increased width gives enough space for scraping systems to clean out easier, preventing the grooves from being clogged with a larger style bedding.

Since being introduced, 34" diamond pattern has been proven to be the most effective and durable floor pattern for barns with a non-sand bedding.

New barn floor finish recommendations:

We recommend a darby smooth concrete floor, or a broom finish, as these are the preferred finishes prior to the concrete being grooved.

Customers tell us that culling in grooved new barns can be reduced from an average 15% (without grooving) to less than 3% (with grooving)
